Chapter 21
It was almost noon when Jack called. âIâve got them rounded up,â he said. âI think weâll check out and come to the boat.â
âThatâs fine. Iâm waiting on a DNA sample and Iâll be ready to go home.â
âThat works for me, too. But I think the girls are going to want to dive again.â
âThatâs not a problem. Weâll leave here and anchor out. They can spend a few hours diving. I might join them.â
âCam,â Jack said in a more serious voice, âIâm sorry to hear about Kailey needing help.â
âHow did you know that? I only told Teresa that Brittany had to leave for a while.â
âI can put it together and so can Diane. Thatâs the only thing that would make her go.â
âYouâre right. Malinda assured me they would be okay.â
âGood. She knows what sheâs doing.â
âYeah, Iâll see you in about an hour?â
âWeâll be there.â
I took Walter out for a walk and he didnât seem too enthusiastic. He likes it when either Malinda or Kailey is with us.
We stopped at the dock store and picked up a few snacks along with a rawhide bone.
âMister, Cam,â Tony said. âHow are you today?â
âIâm doing just peachy. How about you?â
He laughed. âPeachy? Is that good?â
âSometimes.â
âDid the man find you?â
âWhat man?â
âThe one who was here a few minutes ago. He wanted to know which boat was yours.â
âWhat did he look like?â I asked, looking out the window toward my dock.
âHe was tall, thin, and wearing a nice suit.â
âYou mean like a coat and tie?â
âYes. He was Bohemian.â
âThanks, Tony,â I said and hurried out the door and down the dock.
As I approached the boat, I saw a man sitting at my lanai table. He stood when he saw me.
âCan I help you?â I asked.
âBrittany sent me. This is for you,â he said, handing me a paper sack. âWe found hair and a few items, including a cigarette from the ashtray, in his car.â
âThanks. This will be a big help.â
He stared at me for a minute, then walked past me to the dock. He stopped and turned toward me again.
âEvery time you come to the island, you put Brittanyâs life in danger. She never spends a night away from her home and guards. If you are her friend, you wonât come back.â
He turned and walked away.
I thought about what he said. Am I really putting her life in danger? Am I exposing her? He might be right. She is a dangerous woman, and dangerous people have a lot of enemies.
As I watched him turn at the end of the dock, I saw Jack and the girls coming my way. I went inside and put the sack in my bedroom. Walter ran to the end of the dock and greeted them.
âHowâs everyone feeling today?â I asked as they entered the boat.
I got some hard stares.
âJust a little slow,â Stacy said.
âThat bad, huh.â
âAre we going to be able to dive today?â Barbie asked.
âYeah. Weâll stop so you can dive. Then weâre going to head back home.â
âCool,â Stacy said. âThis place is bad for ya.
