Chapter 21

It was almost noon when Jack called. “I’ve got them rounded up,” he said. “I think we’ll check out and come to the boat.”

“That’s fine. I’m waiting on a DNA sample and I’ll be ready to go home.”

“That works for me, too. But I think the girls are going to want to dive again.”

“That’s not a problem. We’ll leave here and anchor out. They can spend a few hours diving. I might join them.”

“Cam,” Jack said in a more serious voice, “I’m sorry to hear about Kailey needing help.”

“How did you know that? I only told Teresa that Brittany had to leave for a while.”

“I can put it together and so can Diane. That’s the only thing that would make her go.”

“You’re right. Malinda assured me they would be okay.”

“Good. She knows what she’s doing.”

“Yeah, I’ll see you in about an hour?”

“We’ll be there.”

I took Walter out for a walk and he didn’t seem too enthusiastic. He likes it when either Malinda or Kailey is with us.

We stopped at the dock store and picked up a few snacks along with a rawhide bone.

“Mister, Cam,” Tony said. “How are you today?”

“I’m doing just peachy. How about you?”

He laughed. “Peachy? Is that good?”

“Sometimes.”

“Did the man find you?”

“What man?”

“The one who was here a few minutes ago. He wanted to know which boat was yours.”

“What did he look like?” I asked, looking out the window toward my dock.

“He was tall, thin, and wearing a nice suit.”

“You mean like a coat and tie?”

“Yes. He was Bohemian.”

“Thanks, Tony,” I said and hurried out the door and down the dock.

As I approached the boat, I saw a man sitting at my lanai table. He stood when he saw me.

“Can I help you?” I asked.

“Brittany sent me. This is for you,” he said, handing me a paper sack. “We found hair and a few items, including a cigarette from the ashtray, in his car.”

“Thanks. This will be a big help.”

He stared at me for a minute, then walked past me to the dock. He stopped and turned toward me again.

“Every time you come to the island, you put Brittany’s life in danger. She never spends a night away from her home and guards. If you are her friend, you won’t come back.”

He turned and walked away.

I thought about what he said. Am I really putting her life in danger? Am I exposing her? He might be right. She is a dangerous woman, and dangerous people have a lot of enemies.

As I watched him turn at the end of the dock, I saw Jack and the girls coming my way. I went inside and put the sack in my bedroom. Walter ran to the end of the dock and greeted them.

“How’s everyone feeling today?” I asked as they entered the boat.

I got some hard stares.

“Just a little slow,” Stacy said.

“That bad, huh.”

“Are we going to be able to dive today?” Barbie asked.

“Yeah. We’ll stop so you can dive. Then we’re going to head back home.”

“Cool,” Stacy said. “This place is bad for ya.
